A mosaic depicting a skeleton pointing to the words “Gnothi seauton”, “Know thyself”. It once decorated the floor of a tomb on the Appian Way; now it is housed in the Baths of Diocletian, Rome [2204 x 2320] [OC]
Small skeleton models like this were often placed on the banquet tables of the Romans as an exhortation to know the limits of human nature and thus to enjoy the joys of life.
