Statuette of Anubis
    Ptolemaic Period

    332–30 B.C.
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 133

The god of mummification Anubis is shown here as a human with a jackal head and a long wig. He is wearing jewelry and a garment with an elaborate feather pattern. Anubis is probably depicted greeting the deceased in the afterlife and protecting him. The statuette is exquisitely carved and painted (note the painted pleating of the kilt).
