A Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé was sold at auction for $143M on May 5th, 2022 ($150M adjusted for inflation). This smashed the previous record set by a Ferrari 250 GTO which sold for just under $50M in 2018.
Only two of this car were ever made. The one sold at auction belonged to the creator of the car, Rudolf Uhlenhaut. The other resides at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart.
This car is a variant of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR, which is infamous for its involvement in the [1955 Le Mans Disaster](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1955_Le_Mans_disaster).
The crash killed 82 spectators and the driver.
