Raghoji Bhonsle was one of the finest generals of the Maratha Empire in its heyday during the 18th century. He is often overshadowed in history by his contemporaries like Peshwa Bajirao and his son Balaji Bajirao with their victorious campaigns against the Nizams, Mughals, Siddis and the Portuguese. However, it is important to note that Raghoji was the main Maratha commander leading the conquests in Central, Southern and Eastern India, conquering the provinces of Berar (revenue sharing agreement with Nizam, the earlier master of the province), Gondwana and Orissa.

The sword was at an auction in London, from where it was acquired by the State Government of Maharashtra, returning it back its orginial homeland. It will likely be kept in the Chatrapati Shivaji Museum in Mumbai, named after the Grandfather of Chatrapati Shahu, whom Raghuji served with great distinction.
