This late Medieval oak door with cat hole was probably a back or interior door of a middle-class home. Cats were primarily kept as working mousers at a time when there was no refrigeration and spoiling grain could tempt mice. 1450-1500 France. On display at Walters Art Museum [1130×1800]

Doors are designed with panels like that so if the wood expands or contracts due to heat or moisture the door won’t warp out of the frame, and this is a feature of modern doors. It’s neat that they thought of this hundreds of years ago.
