Pair of black silk knitted stockings embroidered with green sequins and green and gold beads. Decorated with a winding silver snake that curls twice around the lower leg and whose head rests on the forepart of foot. Made of embroidered and machine-knitted silk with sequins and beads. Exhibited at the Universal Exhibition, Paris, 1900. Extremely reminscent of Toulouse Lautrec’s iconic 1899 image of Jane Avril, with a serpent coiled around her form-fitting black dress.
