Eight-character inscription on the blade: * 邗王是野,作為元用 (“Made for the personal use of king Shiye of Han”) “Han” refers to a region inside the [state of Wu](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wu_(state)), while “Shiye” is sometimes believed to be another name for king [Fuchai of Wu](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuchai_of_Wu) (r. 495–473 BC).
