Grisly souvenir made from the vertebra of Captain George Holmes, who was fatally shot in the spine at the Battle of Waterloo (1815 CE). His widow had his body boiled, & the damaged vertebra removed, varnished & set with silver. She also kept the bullet that killed him [1541×2048]

    1. Was any record made of her motivation for doing these things? Was having a corpse boiled a common or accepted practice at the time?

When bones are white, I think they are called “bleached” I don’t know what chemicals are used in the bleaching.

These bones didn’t appear to have been bleached. Is this the natural color of bones or are we seeing a brown residue of soft tissue?

Was Waterloo different or did people always do insane things with war dead? I learned about Waterloo teeth and few years ago but it seems like people were being salvaged like a junkyard.
