This is the single greatest shot filmed in television history. It’s completely real, it’s NOT a green-screen. One chance, and if James Burke had missed, there would have been no chance of a re-shoot. Destination, the moon or Moscow

    1. It’s an impressive shot, but it’s just good timing and professionalism from James Burke.

    2. Good timing but, it could have been recut as needed and also rockets launch fairly regularly – so they would just wait until the next launch. He got it on first try, but it wasn’t a once in a lifetime shot either.

    3. There was an exact countdown to launch. Practice it a couple of times then when it gets to T-Minus 14 seconds, which is exactly how long it took to deliver his lines, then you Shout “Action !”.

    4. If this is considered the greatest TV shot in history, then it’s incredibly underwhelming and even sad.

    5. I grew up with his series on TV. He educated a whole generation of inquisitive kids. These days they’d call us nerds. In those days our parents condemned us for watching TV. James Burke proved that TV can be educational, even though people criticised it. I Fast forward to today and it’s the same story. Social media can also be educational.

Its not one shot. Only the part just before the launch was perfectly timed. The part while he’s walking could have been shot multiple times. There’s an obvious cut at 0:44

There was a chance of a “re-shoot” 2 weeks later when the other Voyager probe took off!

    8. Producer/Director: “Dude, what if we have Jimmy point at the rocket, say “THAT” and tf rocket goes up. We’ll be famous!”

Y’all are vastly underestimating how easy it is to fuck up a line when your under pressure

    10. Is this really the single greatest shot, or is it just up-cycled over and over brainwashing us to believe it is. I mean, it’s not like there’s an off screen timer for reference… or anything.

    11. It’s two shots. All he had to get right was a scripted 10 second line at the final 10 seconds of the launch countdown in the second clip. The clip suggests that he had to walk past the booster to get in position, but that’s nowhere near the launch viewing area, the booster would be blocking the launch pads. That was filmed separate and at 0:46 he steps into shot 10 seconds before launch to deliver a 10 second line.

Not to say it’s not great, if nobody has seen this series I recommend it. Youtube “Connections James Burke” the first season is the best (very 1970s but the content isn’t dependent on the shooting date) the other two are good but don’t have the same impact.
