Oh, the 3:30am internet rabbit hole. I awoke and started to peruse the Reddits. Eventually I found a post on r/vintageads for a Smith Corona Mail Call device, which lead me to a YouTube site called Techmoan. I sorted their videos by popular, and found a video thesis featuring Prison Tech. In that video they showed a website called….I shit you not….BobBarker.com, which supplies the U.S. prison industry. Bob Barker…dot com. As in The Price is Right. But in this case, “The Price is Wrong, Bitch!”*

Anyhoo…BobBarker.com has an online catalog of prison products. One of them is a tube of toothpaste, which, if the printing is not in error, costs $230 each. I find that interesting as fuck.

*A line in the movie Happy Madison, delivered by Adam Sandler’s title character during an epic on-screen fist-fight with America’s favorite game show host, Bob Barker, who hosted The Price is Right for 35 years on CBS, and who died this past summer at the age of 99.

    2. So this is the price the supplier charges the prison? Do prisoners have to pay for toiletries or is it paid for by the prisons/tax payer dollars? Is there any difference between these products and products we buy at the store, like being made with special materials that can’t be melted into a weapon?

    3. If it was $55.19 it’d be pretty in line with all the other ones on that page, they probably just forgot the decimal point.

    4. If you look, it says CS/QTY- which means how many you get for that price. It looks like you get 24 cases for that price, not 24 tubes.

There’s another thing on this page that doesn’t math good.

72 3oz tubes costs more than 144 1.5oz tubes. It’s the same volume of product, but normally you would expect the larger tubes to cost less per unit volume.
