January 7, 2026Miners in Serra Pelada – Brazil, 1986. It was the largest open mine in the world and it’s estimated 100,000 miners worked there at its peak in 1983. Official records account for 44,5 tons of gold extracted between 1980-1986, but unofficial records suggest 360 tons of gold were extracted [652 × 1012]
