Using online team announcements and Datawrapper, I put together a map of all the base camps for each team in the World Cup this summer. I connected each team to locations for the their group stage games. Base camps are in black, and venues are in gray. Travel paths are color coded by group.
From this, it seems that the World Cup will operate mostly as 4 ongoing tournaments in the group stage. But there are some teams that overlap regions, and a few (like Austria, Jordan, and Bosnia and Herzegovina) that have long travel legs in the group stages.
