The Australian government gives out mining leases similar to how a residential block is broken up for individual housing blocks. (can be anywhere from a few years to 20+)

In order to extract and display this information I accessed each state registry and mapped their shape files. Within these shape files were holder names for each lease but approximately half were not directly registered to the publicly listed companies. They are instead listed to subsidiaries owned by the parent.

This required back analysing approx 20,000 ASX annual reports and extracting and matching the listed subsidiary to the parent. I initially had one holder name was initially matched to 158 different companies before cleaning the matching logic.

In order to easily isolate specific companies and display their neighbours I calculated the distance between every tenement pair within a 50km radius. Quadratic growth meant this produced 65 million individual neighbour records. Beyond 50km would have blown out to 2.7 billion pairs.

I have added photos of an isolated stock WA Resources vs its immediate neighbours.

I have gone in more detail to why I built it in the video below
