I’m currently 44 years old and I spent the first 23 years of my life in East Texas, living in and around Houston.
I’ll gladly tell anyone and everyone that Texas is a great place to be from.

I didn’t even read this as a history meme. I thought you were just talking about modern Florida.

It’s a reference to many observations written in the early 1800s coming from Northerners and foreigners. The most important being Toquesville’ Democracy in America, a seminal sci pol and sociology book about the situation of the US in the 1830s. His description of the underdevelopped South, its economy prisoner of the slavery plantations, and how even the free white lived in despondency compared to their northern neighbors became really famous, among several brilliant observations he made.
He forecasted a lot of things that came to pass. Including the rise of the welfare state and democratic socialism in democracies, the eventual rise of populidm in centralized states, etc etc.

Someone tell OP the north had slaves too. Or don’t. Reddit loves its ignorance.

I had to move to rural Missouri a few years ago due to some family obligations, and let me tell you, as someone who has lived all over the country (OR, WA, Chicago and NY) this is by far the most depressing place I’ve had to live. Of course they are upset about their status in life, but since they have never left the county before, they have no idea that the places run by the people they are told to hate is soooo much better off in pretty much everyway and that their misery is actually due to the numbnuts they keep electing locally. It’s honestly sad and I am so thankful that I get to move back to NY at the end of he month.
