There’s zero evidence that the central leadership was ever involved in it. Which is odd given how the Soviet archives are already open since the dissolution of the USSR, meaning there’s basically and significantly more secrets in the US records than in the old Soviet records left undiscovered.

At least the civil war and the election of the constituent assembly shows that most of them weren’t speccle enough to choose communism. Also there is a good case to be made that the Tsar’s rule was better than the Bolsheviks, objectively better than war communism.

I would say that people hated the heck of the Romanovs because of all the stupid bullcrap Nicky two did and failed to do -and the whole serf system-, and being in a closed room with the whole family and a bunch of firearms was a perfect opportunity for a few of them to discharge some lifelong grievances and all their bullets.

It disgusts me whenever I see tankies defend, justify, or (in the worst cases) celebrate it. If your cause can only succeed if you murder a child, then it deserves to fail.
