    1. Context: Croesus of Lydia, king of the very wealthy Lydian empire (western half of modern Turkey without Thrace area) wanted to make war on the Persian king Cyrus the Great.

      According to a very likely legendary event he consulted the Oracle of Delphi, asked if he should make war upon the Persians and received the answer that he would “destroy a great empire” if he were to attack Cyrus.

      Turns out that empire was his own as the Persians won that war and subjugated Lydia, forcing it to become a satrapy.
