There was no alliance between the two nations at the time. It was operating as a spy ship.
There was an active war between Egypt and Israel, the USA denied having vessels in the area and Israel concluded that the ship off the Egyptian coast that wasn’t theirs was probably Egypt’s.
The ship was not sunk. The attack lasted about 23 minutes.
The Israeli government paid the U.S. government for the families of the dead within a year, paid the families of the wounded within 2 years, and paid the balance plus interest on the material damage to the ship within 13 years.
The sheer amount of “friendly fire” incidents perpetrated by the USA never seems to get brought up with even half the same frequency as this one event. I wonder why?
