His older children and family certainly helped a lot i’m sure but apparently it was common to split up the family or even put the kids on orphanages back then.
My grandma would always tell me the story of her grandfather and his wife that fled back to Italy leaving him with their 5 kids, but now she’s not around to answer any more questions about it 🙁

Man. That’s a rough story. The fact that he stayed with those kids says volumes
Man of honor.
Lucky

Based great grandpa
You should drop this in one of the Photoshop/ photo restoration subs, some folks there can do wonders and fix that for you so you can get it printed and framed.
Gotta say… huge hands seems to be a family trait!
And props to your great-great-grandpops, that was a pretty advanced approach for his era!
Wow this is so fucking cool. What an amazing man!

He’s a good man. Those kids don’t look like they’re having a carefree life and Dad looks pretty serious, their faces speak volumes.
That is a real man.
cmon commenters get outta here with that ai shit
Man, my family has the opposite story. She came to America to find him and met her future husband on the boat when she couldn’t find him after a year in New York, she assumed he was dead and remarried with four kids and then they had one more together.
God bless him.
We have the same similar pic too!
What a legend. Which part of the boot did he come from?
How is the intergenerational mental health doing?
What a G

She was for the viale.
Your Great Great Grandpa was a real one. Your great great grandma was a ho for sho
Good man. Is it possible she was getting together with the other man before the last two were born? They look alike, but different than the older three (cheeks, eyes, smaller hands). I work in family law and you’d be surprised the number of men who are unknowingly taking care of kids who are not their own. And with her actions in leaving with another man, I wouldn’t be that surprised.
Damn
That’s pretty dirty of her
Poor kids
What about Timothy Chalamet?

Imagine trying to raise 5 kids alone in this economy

It’s clear he was a gentle father. They are all looking to our right side of the lens, while he looks at the lens and holds his youngest gently.for.the photo (who was probably running around just a moment ago).
He got help from his oldest son and daughter, for sure, they are all serious, but they also all seem like they’ll burst laughing/running around the place. Looks like a happy family (serious for a photo, which was a serious thing, and expensive back then).
As Italian, this is the one thing that I know. That picture right there reminds me of my grandmother and her sisters who knew how to cook and clean by the time they were seven. You can see how resilient they are as well.
Hell yeah Nonno!
Sounds like my story. My dad raised 4 kids after my mom left him.
That’s pretty rare – most men would remarry a sister or cousin. That happened on both sides of my family – first wife died so great grandpa married her sister and went on to have more kids.
