    1. If I’m not mistaken, he also performed the first ever helicopter rescue as well.

He was a good one. Reused designs of his so he didn’t run costs up. I flew blackhawks. loved em.

      Edit: writing actual coherent statements.

Didn’t Da Vinci invent the helicopter?? Obviously Sikorsky created the first modern example, wasn’t man-powered, etc., but tricky thing to say outright he invented it, no?

    4. True story: when I was 10, I tried to build my own helicopter by putting a lawnmower engine on top of a wooden crate I was building. I figured if I put the engine on a makeshift gimbal with a cricket stump as a handle, I could steer myself about and be the envy of all – even charge 50c a sightseeing flight.

I was a bit grumpy when my parents put a stop to the project. As I’m a parent now, I can kind of understand their hesitation.

Bastante antes que él y durante la segunda guerra mundial los alemanes diseñaron, construyeron y volaron los dos modelos primeros helicopteros operacionales del mundo.

Sikorsky was a legit engineer, and his company was just as great. IIRC, when the US military told companies they were looking for a new helicopter, Sikorsky (the company, I think Igor was dead by this point, but I’m not sure) made their design and stress tested via factors that’d be a shit ton worse than what they’d be exposed to in combat. They shot everything with 50 cals, shot some components with RPGs, etc., all in an effort to make the most survivable helicopter.

Also, while they’re known for their helis, they *used* to make planes. The Sikorsky Ilya Muromets (any BF1 player or other avgeek knows about it) was one of the first passenger planes to have a toilet and I believe a heated cabin for the PAXs’. When WW1 rolled around, the Russian air force converted them to bombers, and I’m pretty sure the Muromets was one of the first aircraft to have an internal bomb bay.

All around, Sikorsky (both the man himself and the company as a whole) make good shit.

    7. That’s actually incorrect, the Helicopter got its name from the REAL inventor.

      John H. Helicopter

The H. also stands for Helicopter.

Most won’t know the “Blackhawk” is a Sikorsky. The UH-61 and such….

I was just wondering when the helicopter was invented! Now my phone reads my thoughts.

His head is the same shape as the front glass. They should have put his happy mug on all of them like Thomas the train.

And 24 years later humans walked the moon. That’s just weird af. That’s like it the helicopter were invented in 2002 and then the first moon landing in 2026 what the fuck ? 🤔
