The British and Dutch were sneaky af.
They didn’t just land with soldiers and start occupying land. They showed up with gifts and found out who hated who. Then they made a deal with whichever side would cave first for trade rights in a port.
You’ve now got a British quarter of the port just like the Venetians of old. Eventually the locals want you out and pursue that who violence. THAT’S when the soldiers come in. Purely defensively of course.
