In this subway you no longer talk to the people making the sandwich

    1. As someone who never seems to understand the people behind the counter this is a blessing.

    2. As someone whos worked retail, and food, the lack of human interaction is both a bane and a boon. This sadly relegates the workers to only ever having negative interactions

It’s been a long time since I’ve been in a Subway. One of my few memories are the people who can’t decide what they want on their sandwich.

I can’t remember the last time I was in a fast food restaurant that wasn’t like this.

It’s nice. Especially because it means you can easily customise your meal. The cooks just have to follow the tickets they are given.

    5. Since they nixed roast beef at subways in 🇨🇦 i haven’t been back. That was my Subway usual since 1991.

    6. Personally, I like the automated kiosks in restaurants. It allows people to actually have a second to look at the menu and discover different options that they might not be familiar with without wasting anyone else’s time

    7. Fuck no. You can’t say “just a little bit of mustard on one side” to a kiosk. I thought the whole point of subway was their sandwich artists.

    8. As a customer and someone who has worked multiple retail jobs, not interacting with people is a huge perk to me. People are the worst thing about retail. Both sides.

    9. I have never once missed the “opportunity” to have a fascimile of social interaction with a tired worker who just wants to get paid for the hour

    10. I prefer my usual system of providing the salad items in pairs of two so i get more than if they know how packed i’m making it from the beginning..

      Tomatos lettuce…..

      Cucumber onion……

      And peppers…..

      Oh and jalepenos…..

      And crispy onions.

      Few more peppers….

      Thanks!

I know this is bad for the future, but I do much prefer screens, where I can mess about and take my time. Also, when I’m pigging out, I feel less shame about whatever massive amount of food I am ordering.

    12. I know it’s a bit dystopian, but on average, this is probably a better ordering experience tbh. At least at subway.

    13. I have food allergies and always have to watch food workers to make sure they in fact DO change gloves, to make sure nothing was put on by mistake, tell them it’s an allergy issue, having no real human puts my health highly at risk

    14. Subway is garbage anyway at this point. The moment they didn’t have the Cold Cut Combo and BMT on the menu they were dead to me because only the people who had worked there for a few years remember how to make it. But they have personal pizza and chicken nuggets? GTFO.

    15. I LOVE restaurants woth digital ordering like this, because I hate having to explain my complicated orders with lots of modifications and substitutions…. And also sometimes I just want four junior bacon cheese burgers, and nothing else, and I feel weird saying that to an employee. The downside is that sometimes these systems dont allow for modifications… Im looking at you, taco bell!

I must admit the only reason I don’t go to Subway is because everyone seems to know all the variations, ingredients and steps in ordering while I was really late to the Subway party. I have no idea what to order and would hold the line up to no end! A machine like this and I’d be down.

    17. Nobody’s going to mention the Shawarma spiced chicken though? That sounds great. I feel like the US menu has been the same for at least ten years.

    18. Reminds me of the other day at McDonald’s. The person at the cash register asked me to please order at the kiosk, but I couldn’t because the kiosk had no option for me to choose no tartar sauce on my Fish Filet….

One of the few draws of a Subway is that they make the sandwich in front of you and you can tell them if you want more of one thing or not. When I ask for extra mayo, I can make sure I get my extra mayo. This sucks.

    20. The kiosks at most places seem hell-bent on value extracting every penny from us. We can pretty easily convey to an employee that we’d like mushrooms, beans, tofu, or egg instead of a meat option on an otherwise non-vegetarian option. But if we say go to Taco-Bell and try the same thing, suddenly our cheaper option might literally add 50% cost to just get the same amount of food /without/ the most expensive component because the kiosks aren’t programmed to fuckin’ deal with it.

And like, how are we suppose to charm workers into “No seriously. A, shit, /bucket/ of Red Onion, and then some extra after X3!” and “You know all the Lettuce you intended to put on this? Replace that with an equivalent amount of cilantro please!” this again might double the price of an item for us, when we’re absolutely trying to minimize or substitute for ingredients that are much more expensive.

Due to both allergies and diet, we can really only get food we didn’t make ourselves now precisely at the kinda line-assembly restaurants with interaction… Only way to actually be fed while out in the wild, and to make sure we’re not feeling poisoned for the next day/two.

The fact anyone still goes to subway is insane to me. The prices have outgrown the food quality by a huge margin.
