My child and I agree on what to name these, but the teacher does not.

Nah, pond for the first, lake for the second

Glad they didn’t correct it to “Gulf of America” though

Yeah the teacher is 100% wrong here. A lake is an enclosed body of water (although tbh that looks more like a pond than a lake, but whatever) while a bay opens into the ocean.

Source: I live in a country with lots of bays.

Bay is correct, teacher is wrong. Lake is correct i guess but looks a lot more like a pond

A bay can’t be a closed body of water by definition. The bottom left picture could possibly be a lake but the center picture can’t possibly be a bay.

Honestly, kids name things way more accurately than adults sometimes teacher’s just not ready for that level of truth

As a teacher myself, this one is wrong. That said, grading things we can make mistakes. Though this one seems confident.

Honestly, not a bad hand drawn from memory map of the Gulf of Mexico either. As much as it depresses me to say, most adult Americans would probably do worse.

Bays are part of a larger body of water, like the ocean. The one in the middle is at best a lake but it looks more like a pond. The teacher seems a bit odd to me.

    9. stoneman9284 on

Bottom left could go either way but that middle one is absolutely not a bay

    10. TheRemedy187 on

Thats absolutely not a lake but if we are under those constraints that’s all you’re left with. That teacher absolutely does not understand what a bay is.

    11. I’d even call the lake a pond.

Rule of thumb. If you can’t throw a stone across it easily, it’s a lake.

So many things wrong with this:

To everyone saying the middle is a pond, pond is not an option from the word bank. Also, the teacher gave it an 8/10, when it’s really a 6/8, plus 1 for the bonus question. So it would be 7/9 if the bonus question is worth 1 point, I guess. Not 8/10.

And yeah the teacher is obviously wrong and I suspect they’re just looking at an answer key that is wrong, and haven’t used their brain at their job in ages.

    13. Bottom left is literally a picture of the Bay of Naples. That’s Mount Vesuvius in the background. Teacher is absolutely wrong.

    14. I disagree it’s a lake. It’s a bass pond at best. But that other one is definitely a bay!

What the teacher is calling a “bay” is nothing of the sort… that’s a small pond, if anything. A fish pond, specifically. Man made.

The other one… it could be a lake, it could be a bay, it’s impossible to tell from the context shown since you can’t see if there’s an opposite side or not. Without that context, I’d have to say it’s a bay.

I’m impressed with the Gulf of Mexico label and drawing! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

    17. katanaking007 on

Exactly how does one sail into a bay without it opening to a larger body of water?

I learned this year from my daughter’s teacher.. there’s good teachers… and some fucking dumb teachers

    19. SirErickTheGreat on

I’m surprised the teacher didn’t cross out “Gulf of Mexico” and put “Gulf of America”

    20. Teacher here who teaches this tooic and your teacher is wrong. You are 100% correct. Also these worksheet activities are nonsense.
