People think cleaning horse hooves hurts them, but it actually doesn’t

    1. It’s just keratin. It’s like trimming a nail or getting a hair cut.

Don’t go too deep though or you could cause harm… just like trimming a nail.

    2. It’s only the frog part that makes my stomach cringe. The rest doesn’t look like it would hurt.

The smell after the farrier would leave was something I don’t think I can forget.

“Horses wear shoes primarily to protect their hooves from excessive wear and tear caused by domestication and work. While wild horses roam across natural, varying terrain that helps their hooves harden and wear down at a balanced rate, domesticated horses often face different environmental stresses.”

The smell makes me vomit……. dogs chew on those hoof trimmings…. god!

    6. I always find these videos fascinating, but I do wonder first how humans came up with the idea of essentially giving them shoes and secondly how horses in the wild maintain their hooves?

No one is making a horse do anything it doesn’t want to. If having its hooves cared for hurt they wouldn’t stand there and let you do it. It’s no different than having your nails clipped.

Besides, I bet they like having the farrier stop by more than they like their hooves growing out so far they split or curl.

I’m more amazed that horse actually let us do this to them without putting up a fight.

A horse wouldn’t sit still if that hurt. You’d get your face caved in at Mach 4

    10. It may not hurt, but I always wonder about the people who discovered this thousands of years ago. “Hey let’s try like, shaving off the bottom of their foot, cauterize it, then nail some metal to the bottom. I bet they’ll be fine.”

    11. I imagine not trimming horses hooves would be similar to not trimming our toe nails. Just way, way worse for the horses.
