Dude was shook and believed the hype around Lee and Stonewall.
In some defense of him he did have difficult strategic decision because on one hand he should be a general and try to win the war but the reality is that Congress was scared of the next bull run happening and being overrun so they wanted DC protected and made that clear to him and was putting pressure on him.
Ultimately though he was more afraid of losing than he desired to win. And so stalemate/failure is what you got.

Its been a hot few years since i read anything to do with the ACW but IIRC McClellan was on the whole very capable as an organiser and did have a lot of skills, he just wasnt the right sort for supreme command.
