    1. From 1961 to 1974, Portugal fought [colonial wars](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portuguese_Colonial_War) against insurgents in the Portuguese Africa: MPLA, FNLA and UNITA in Angola, PAIGC in Guinea and FRELIMO in Mozambique.

Salazar was adamently opposed to granting independence to colonies which often were under Portuguese sovereignty since centuries and the *Estado Novo* regime viewed these territories as part of its mainland, much like Algeria was part of France.

In the mainland, ideological opposition to colonialism was mainly from the Communists. Their methids included propaganda, sabotage and, like in this picture, desertion (thousands of young men avoided conscription by emigrating illegally).

After the 1974 Carnation Revolution, the new regime quickly granted independence to the African colonies, only retaining Macao in China.
