In all reality Rome killed Jesus because Pontius Pilate was pressured by both the emperor and the jews. The emperor warned him not to allow another Jewish uprising or else he’d be removed from power and the jews threatened another uprising if he didnt crucify Jesus. The jews directly wanted him to be crucified. Pontius only wanted him punished. Thats why he at first ordered him to be scourged and then presented back. Unto which the jews wanted him crucified still afterward. Making Jesus’s sacrifice mostly at the hand of the jewish leaders of the Sanhedrin.

I personally don’t think his death was necessary for human salvation, but a consequence of someone in perfect harmony with God living in an imperfect and disharmonious world.
