      Unrelated tangent to the post here, but the Qing dynasty really doesn’t get the credit it deserves for surviving as well as it did. The taiping rebellion nearly won and killed 20-30 million people at least. The Dungan revolt killed or displaced over 20 million people. WW1 killed about 15-22 million btw. And these two happened at about the same time.

      And these were only the most notable, there was also the panthay rebellion in Yunnan and the Red Turban rebellion in Guangdong. At the same time as the two opium wars, China being carved up by foreign powers, and massive internal factional infighting and corruption.

      Yet despite all this the Qing, widely regarded as a corrupt and incapable corpse today, somehow managed to survive. The government only fell decades later to a revolution in 1911
