    1. As it turns out, in a world war, a lot of countries tend to do war crimes. That doesn’t make it okay. Also, frankly, I expect damn near every country involved to have done terrible things, but people only focus on Germany, Japan, and the Soviets because they lost (or in the case of the Soviets, had to be painted as the new enemy and made scary).

    2. I think the more interesting question is, which country DIDN’T commit war crimes during the entirety of WW2

Something ppl don’t understand is talking about one person’s flaws isn’t a defence of another

I think imperial japan should be a given here when the war crimes Germany is mentioned because they were on the same side

War crimes happen in every war. I’ve personally spoken to veterans of WWII, Korean War, Viet Nam who admitted committed war crimes and I’ve seen TV and print media accounts by people who served in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and the Wars in Afghanistan and Iraq in which soldiers admitted to committing or witnessing war crimes. And we were the good guys. But people do horrible things in war. That’s why war is hell.

I hate how Nazis and their sympathisers try to compare the Soviet Union to Nazi germany. There is no comparison to be made there. The Nazis attacked the Soviets first for no reason, tried to literally genocide the entire country of 200 million people, and then were shocked when the Soviets got mad and struck back. Yeah, bohoo, you lost Königsberg and got partitioned. Maybe don’t genocide people.

Stalins regime killed about 8-9 million people over the course of 30 years (according to secret Soviet documents that were released in the 90s). The Nazis, in just 6 years, killed 30 million through the war they started, deliberately murdered ten million civilians in the holocaust, and planned to kill hundreds of millions. They were infinitely worse.

I think what prompts that is that the Germans were actually held responsible for theirs, and the others not so much.

If you commit war crimes and mass genlcide you are a monster and deserve to be kicked out of this reality no matter the color of your flag.

I know, stunning and brave sentiment.

At this point I think its that people have only emphasized Germany’s war crimes especially in public schools. Unless your teacher went beyond that to talk about Japan and the USSR’s war crimes you probably wouldnt know.

Plus in the modern political zeitgeist the people that always go directly to comparing to Germany will defend the USSR or if they automatically bring up Japan they will defend the actions of China after the CCP took over.

    10. this comment section has become what the meme depicts entirely

The axis committed much more horrible and many more crimes against humanity than the western allies during this time period

The axis deserve every bit of admonishment they’ve received

    11. Eh, all where monsters. That dosent paint anyone as liberatores or exonerate them, what is necessary to accept is that only one called for the total murderous cleansing of the other. That’s a differentiation we Germans have long since come to terms with.

The foreign internet warriors should too.

The problem is that people are so desensitized and yet somehow separated from the harsh realities of war that they don’t understand that every single fighting force that has ever existed has committed war crimes. You don’t get a few hundred guys or more together and at least one or two of them aren’t absolute monsters. That’s just a fact. It does narrow it down a little bit when you take into account who was ORDERED to commit war crimes, but even then it can be kind of a matter of the times. For instance, there have been many times where the US government decided that the troops weren’t having a fun enough time waging war, so just to spice it up a little you guys can’t shoot unless you’re already getting shot at like some fucked up CoD quirk. If we had that ruling in WW2, we might still be trying to purge legitimate Nazi cells all over Europe. If any president- Democrat, Republican, Maga, whatever tf- ordered troops with boots on the ground today to smoke enemy combatants without it needing to be in self defense at all whatsoever, a good portion of the world would be crying for said president to be put on trial for war crimes. And you want to know what makes it better? Only “good” guys care about war crimes. Much like gun control, putting limitations on the fighting abilities of either side only affects the side that cares about the law, because bad guys don’t give a shit about your rules of engagement, they’re never showing up to your pussy ass UN subpoena anyway. Wtf are you gonna do about it? Smoke the bad guys? What if they’re not shooting at you yet? Fucking dummies.
