Especially when imposing modern ideologies on figures that predate them.

I can kind of see it. It’s more like the traditional clear cut good guy v bad guy paradigm seldom passes a sniff or scaling test.

Turns out a lot of our ways of perceiving politics and philosophy is quite specific for our time.

The gospel accounts when well read show some truly disturbing things. Like Jesus telling parables that include beating, torturing, and killing slaves, and saying that slaves who only do what is asked of them should consider themselves worthless. Or saying that his followers need to sell everything they own, leave their families, and hate their families, or calling Canaanite people dogs. Also referring to groups of jews as the sons of satan who do satan’s bidding. Hardly the progressive and loving figure that Jesus is commonly known as, at least not by 2026 standards.

I looked at this meme and thought really hard about it, but…
Donald Trump actively worked to protect pedophiles and cover up child rape allegations against him.
Not sure where that fits on the progressive-conservative spectrum so it’s giving me trouble. Maybe a grey area I guess.

I call BS on this … the first part is true but the second one should be „… and conservative historical figures were probably more batshit crazy conservative than you think.“

Yeah, for example Hitler liked animals and didn’t like smoking. So not totally evil, right?

If Redditors could read they’d be very upset by this.
