Discovered that people were already living there for thousands of years?
That said, fuck Columbus.

It’s not so much the discovery that mattered, but the fact that once the Americas were on the map history for the Americas changed forever.

I mean, if Leif Erikson discovered the Americas, why didn’t Columbus know the Americas were there?

I thought the Vikings discovering the new world was a myth for such a long time, literally until I went to the L’anse Aux Meadows site myself.

Multiple people can discover things independently. Neither of them were the first to discover it, than honour goes to whoever in Eastern Asia decided to go further east many thousands of years ago, but Erickson and Columbus both got there on their own and discovered it, even if Columbus thought he was in India.

By that logic, the first people that crossed Bering Land Bridge from Siberia during the last glacial maximum discovered it long before Erikson.
Even then, the Siberians and the Natives of Alaska never stopped trading.

Didn’t Columbus visit Iceland months before his voyage?

Ok and?
Columbus said it to the world and changed it
The Vikings did nothing with this info
You can hate Columbus, he was a pos, but dimishing his discovery is just childish behaviour

What they really mean is “Columbus is the reason we know about America,” which is true, but he wasn’t the only person to discover it.
