When I was a kid, I admired big guns. As I grew up, I only had one question in my head: What kind of military idiot do you have to be to spend billions on building this?

Theoretically could you make a bunker buster with huge artillery like this ? Shoot the projectile super high then let it come down on bunker . Have artillery mounted on platform that can be lowered underground after shooting so it’s harder to destroy. Would only be useful against neighboring countries . I know this Would be mostly impractical but it would be pretty dam cool specially for a country lacking a traditional airforce.

Look if you somehow convince the top brass and they approve your very experimental/ once in a life time military weapon that will most likely never be made again, you just go for it. There is a slim chance it works and does change the tide of war, but most times it wont and will be a wast of time and money but you still got a chance most wont.

The cannon is massive but nothing compared to the balls on the guy on the right.

See, some of the railway guns did have a use when it came to long range shelling. But most of this stuff was completely snubbed by the V-1 and V-2 program, which arguably was a way better investment of resources.
Outside of that, it was just a positioning tactic to go “see, we have the biggest gun, surrender” similar to modern countries going “we have the biggest army” then losing a war.

Maybe in the pre bomber plane era, huge guns made sense. But when bomber planes can deliver comparable ordnance with much less logistical strain…
Hitler jerked us all before circlejerks existed
Just like on television, power scaling is always an imperfect science.Â
The IJN tried to advance metallurgy instead of accepting that the [18″ Type 94 naval gun](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/46_cm/45_Type_94_naval_gun) made zero sense.
All my homies love the Italian [triple 15 turrets instead.](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/bc/15-50_gun_M1934.jpg)
