I think this person is just figuring out how to pay attention to the world around her for the first time. Bin Laden *famously* hid out in the mountains, it was kinda like his whole thing. Mountains are on the cover of The Kite Runner, which I’m pretty sure is required reading in most schools. The mountains of Afghanistan are literally the origin story of (MCU) Iron Man for crying out loud!
Nobody lied about this, it’s literally paramount to the entire history of the region and was widely covered in almost all forms of media for the past two and a half decades.
TimArthurScifiWriter on
Americans are extremely propagandized. It’s not their fault. This is the cost of living in a military superpower. When it has to do business, it has to justify that business to its own people. Now as a people Americans are little more than civilian residents of a giant military base but nevertheless they get make life on that base really uncomfortable for the people trying to run the show if they get too loud.
So the entire world is reduced to stereotypes. Turban wearing goat herders in deserts. Drunken Slavs squatting in front of depressing communist apartment blocks. Sweaty old men hanging around on benches in poverty-stricken rural dust-towns in Mexico. Shanty towns in Africa. And then America, the beacon of civilization and prosperity. Makes it easier to drop bombs without protest that way.
The moment Americans realize that the diminished awareness that they have of the rest of the world is an involuntary tax that’s being levied on their development as a human being, in order to prop up and sustain a system of international violence, the whole thing will come crashing down. There is a world in which America can be a country with a military instead of a military with a country. I hope to see it in my lifetime.

You can feel however you want, but lack of curiosity isn’t the same as being propagandized because news reports were typically filmed in the safety of Kabul and its suburbs…
imo if your country is waging war, it’s really your responsibility as a citizen to learn some basic stuff about that place. Hate the war, but your country is still killing thousands in your name and your taxes are supporting it. You should be able to find these places on a map and understand the basic outlines of the conflict.
I know this is super preachy, but it’s something that one can recognize and address. When I was in college like 20 years ago we dropped bombs to kill some people in I think Yemen and Syria in addition to Afghanistan and Iraq, and I realized that I only assumed i knew roughly where those places were, but couldn’t pick them out on a map. I felt such deep shame that my country was killing people in a place I couldn’t even pick out in a map let alone know anything about. I realized I’m the problem in a real way – a public that is uneducated and indifferent. I spent a great deal of time trying to correct that – and while I don’t assume or think everyone needs to go deep, I stand by the idea that at a minimum if your country is killing people you ought to educate yourself about them and the place they live.
Edit: in hindsight, I mean, I guess she is doing that, and that’s a good thing – I was just taken aback by the attitude that it was propaganda that led to her lack of knowledge and the lack of shame at being so uninformed.
