Frankly, I expect they were just wandering for so long they eventually just went ‘fuck it, this is the best we’re gonna get and I am really tired of walking’, decided to make the next rare occurrence count as a divine signal, and set up camp.

Unironically though, water based transportation is generally way better logistically than any other form. Both in ability to scale and cost. Even now, look at the damage being caused because a premier water based logistics route has been obstructed. You can’t make up for that with air or land based logistics.

Easily tamable landscape with arable soil and fresh water is also much contested and easy to conquer so be ready to fight bloody wars over it. Meanwhile if you learn to live in the desert you can be sure as hell nobody is going to fight you over the ownership.
