As a military member, this is almost chronic with conservatives in general; they genuinely think that we’re rah-rah unstoppable.
We’re very powerful, very capable, and very advanced, and rightfully considered the most powerful fighting force in human history.
But we’re not unstoppable, and we have very real limitations, and, yes, we are very aware of them.
The problem is that many people, for better or worse, really have this deluded, almost childlike faith in the military to be utterly dominant and unstoppable all the time.
Everyone with a brain in the military knew this was a bad idea. We knew the plan wasn’t any good.

Trump is making the mistake a lot of people make: he thinks wars are won by destroying their stuff and killing their soldiers, when in reality wars are won by breaking their will to fight. That’s the cardinal rule of a war. The loser is the side that loses the will to fight back first, period.
That’s the problem with Trump’s shield approach with Iran. They have been his punching bag for years, with no matter what they do they get shat on by him. They were complying wit the Iran deal. Solemani got killed without any direct provocation. Trump has multiple times just picked on them and made very clear that their actions have nothing to do with it. Iran complying doesn’t get them peace, Iran surrendering won’t get them peace. So they will resist because the outcome is the same anyway, but this way at least they keep their dignity.
