Most Americans don’t understand what communism and socialism actually are. This was true during the Cold War, and it is true today.

It isn’t just that.
I have seen Americans online call anything they didn’t like Communism or Socialisms.
This sometimes included things that had nothing to do with politics but also things that were political but the polar opposite of socialism.
US for profit healthcare, the theory of Evolution, literal Nazis, interracial marriage, homosexuality, an app preventing you from buying certain stocks, vaccines, paper straws…
All socialism according to some people.
Curiously enough some things that actually are socialism like Social Security or disability benefits or similar are not recognized as socialism.
