I have seen them balance on their hind legs to grab apples off tree limbs after they ate all the ones on the ground. They can get pretty high up there.

You could just put chili powder in with a bird seed.It doesn’t affect the birds.

I heard a bar of Irish spring soap deters them. They don’t like the smell, my husband hung some from our fruit trees but they still ate them. If they just ate the fruit I wouldn’t care so much. But they eat all the leaves and even strip some of the bark killing the trees before they have a chance to grow.
