      I mean it actually used to be acceptable for congressmen to physically beat eachother up. Thankfully, that’s been since corrected as one found out when they tried to pick a fight.

      We’re a *very* politically active people.

      In a way, the growing apathetic mindset worries me more than any extremist.

    5. Not quite as old, but in Dracula (1897) Quincy, the American’s main job is to get Winchesters rifles so the can chase down Dracula. Of course, he also actually kills Dracula too.

    6. In 1872 the country was still under Reconstruction policies. Those rioters were probably Civil War veterans.

      Rough time for the nation. The Republican Party was trying to figure out how much corruption was acceptable and the Democratic Party was trying to figure out how much racism was acceptable.

      If anything this is sort of encouraging. Nothing going on right now is all that new, we survived dark times like this before and we can do it again

    8. Old school politics got pretty crazy back in the day. Candidates would get stories printed in the newspapers saying their opponents were hermaphrodites or even that they had died.
