Pointing to the guns alone is a vast simplification of his decades long war of Unification. While they were helpful, contemporary sources and 19th-20th century historians have stated that there is a misconception of their importance. Firearms and firearm training was in limited supply. Kamehameha stilled relied heavily on traditional warrior weapons.
But more than that, he used a series of marriages and alliances to gain favor before using religious fervor (a prophecy) to build his army while having the caste and birthrite that could allow him to become Ali’i Nui of all of Hawai’i. He also allied with Americans who taught him about strategy.
Ancient Hawaiian warfare did involve some strategy but not classical formations. Their battles appear to be more similar to the way medieval battles are depicted on TV with tons of bodies being thrown at each other. So using modern American and European tactics made for a fighting force unlike anything the islands had fought before.

I don’t understand why they had to force the black guy in there. The real life Anthony Allen was a friend of Kamehameha but he didn’t fight with him in any of his battles. John Young and Isaac Davis were the ones who taught his troops how to use modern weapons and actually fought with Kamehameha on the battlefield. they became essentially high chiefs under Kamehameha and when given chances to return to the US, they both declined and lived their whole lives in Hawaii as citizens of the kingdom. Maybe the producers were afraid of having “white saviors” but I think John Young in particular is such a fascinating person. He went from hostage, to trusted high advisor / governor, to the grandfather of the queen of Hawaii.
