The Sarmatians were Iranian-speaking nomadic tribes related to the Scythians, who appeared in the Pontic steppe in the 3rd–2nd century BC. They quickly became a major military force, controlling vast territories and influencing the ancient world, including Greek cities and even the Roman Empire.

Sarmatian society was highly stratified, reflected in both rich burial mounds filled with luxury goods and poorer graves. At their peak (1st century AD), they developed the distinctive polychrome style — gold jewelry inlaid with gemstones, enamel, and glass.

They maintained wide trade and cultural connections across the ancient world. Their dominance ended in the 4th century AD with the arrival of the Huns.
