Alexander, on the left, suffered a severe wound in an early battle and became a hospital nurse. Edmund, in the middle, survived the war. James, on the right, was killed in action at the “Dead Angle” at Cheatham Hill during the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain on June 27, 1864. A fourth brother, Charles, joined Co. K of 7th Tennessee Infantry Regiment, part of General Archer’s Brigade and was captured at Gettysburg on July 3rd during Pickett’s Charge while assaulting Cemetery Ridge. He was a POW at Fort Delaware and paroled April 1865.

Co. Aytch by Sam Watkins (about Company H) is a great read.

Most war memoirs were written by officers, but Watkins was just rank-and-file.

While he was a confederate, his writing is not particularly concerned with ideology, just relating the regular joe’s experience in the war.
