I still don’t fully understand how this works, like sure if someone started shooting blood out if their eye Id be like “Yea.. fuck this” but why would an animal thats about to eat the lizard care that it got some gravy flying at it?

Might be one the rare defenses known as ‘Dude is too weird! Let’s not mess with them’!

I lived Midland Texas as a kid
They were everywhere. My brothers t-shirts were all stained with blood ! He would not stop catching them. Just so they would squirt blood at him !

    4. I saw this once! the neighbor girl(maybe 5) was poking a horned toad with a stick, most likely instigated by the larger group of older children she was with(i was watching from their, the neighbors, house). so horned toads swell up first like a balloon as a defense mechanism, then suddenly its eyes were covered in blood and the little girl starts screaming, and I look at her and her face and eyes were smeared with blood(from her instantly touching her face) and the group of kids starts freaking out, a parent sprints over and carries the girl inside, it was a whole thing. we thought she popped its eye out. they were directed to rinse her eyes and she was fine, i guess it burns, like anything that gets in your eye.
