The longest tweet you might read today. TLDR: bro bought imaginary land in multiple universes and they went back where they came

    1. I set my money on fire and now I have no money.

It’s the fault of everybody except me.

This is deeper and better satire than most of Jay McInerney’s later work.

    3. How any of these dudes aren’t showing up at Zuck’s doorstep with torches and pitchforks, I’ll never understand. But then again, whatever. You got what you paid for.

This was amazing satire, were people actually buying virtual ‘real estate’? Wtf would do that and why?

    5. Read this in a grizzled detective voice with smooth jazz in the background for maximum effect.

    6. But I thought it was on the blockchain.

It’s amazing to me how much money gets spent by people on tech they have a first grade understanding of.

    7. I feel that we should outsource the cries of despair needed to empty that man’s soul, just so that he can make it through a day at Panera without crying into his bread bowl.

This is the future tech bros want for us. The whole “you’ll own nothing and be happy” hits harder now.

    9. “long term bullish means I can’t sell it without crying in a Panera” fucking gold my god

    10. I briefly made the foolish mistake of observing web3 communities like a nature documentary. The only thing that wasn’t real about this post?

The undertones of regret. Everything else was SO COMMON. (Except the villa, I don’t think meta sold digital land)

Is the game Second Life still a thing? This reminds me of people buying property in that game like decades ago.

The capstone of “@Grok too long” in the final page is just… Like modern art. Some real “For sale: Baby shoes, never worn” shit.

    13. Whoa whoa wait wait wait….. I didnt follow the Metaverse closely because I thought it was really really..
REALLY stupid. But people paid real money for digital real estate?

Tell those people I have student loads that have digital real estate on them too

    14. Great satire, this should be part of a book of essays on internet idiots.

I **almost** understand the appeal of the metaverse early buy-ins, they thought they could get on the ground floor of “Ready Player One”, but the tech wasn’t nearly what was promised and Zuckerberg is ultimately a sociopathic moron… but anyone who actually spent money on a jpeg of a monkey is someone who likely would’ve been institutionalized in the 19th century.

The sad thing is: Rich people bought virtual land or ape NFTs which are worthless now, but they actually don’t care too much, since they are still incredibly rich. Buying virtual land for a few millions didn’t hurt them.
