Trump doesn’t understand global markets (or, more likely, he knows his MAGA audience doesn’t). Yeah, the oil coming to the US doesn’t go through the Strait of Hormuz. But if you can’t get the oil that goes through there, the global supply goes down significantly, and places start paying extra for oil coming out of other routes. That makes it more expensive for us to buy oil because now more places are competing for the oil that we had been importing.
And, of course, the rest of the world knew that Iran would close the Strait. We’ve known that for close to 50 years. It’s a high-traffic corridor right along their coast. Only Trump was “surprised” about this.
