    1. Were they the Goodies or the Baddies? I can never work it out with wars that involve Americans

e2a: 45mins later, with all the downvotes and even Reddit suggesting “Your comment on r/HistoryPorn sparked a conversation!” I don’t see an consistent answer.

Looks like I’m not the only one to not know

(More downvotes incoming for not understanding humour)

It’s a real shame that they likely didn’t live long enough to see the passage of the civil rights act.

It’s always wild when I sit and see something like this posted; just feels like worlds apart when I think of the dates and how old they probably were when fighting compared to this photo.

Wonder what their thoughts were to both world wars….

Don’t despise the men, as much as the incompetent generals and political movement. These guys survive mine-ball barrages as much as any side?

    5. And to think not so long after their grandsons would go to fight in ‘Nam. War truly never changes. Terrible.

    6. Interestingly, I think the last person receiving civil war pension benefits, died a couple years ago. She was the daughter, and she received $73 a month until she died in 2020. Pretty crazy. Irene triplet I think was her name.

That’s actually about what I thought Confederate soldiers would look like.

I see three losers who fought for the worst cause in the world.

I have no sympathy and I hope they rot in hell

    9. We’re getting close to having a photo like this for the last three of our World War II veterans.

How old were they when they were fighting? The end of the civil war and 1951 is 86 years…

      Unpopular opinion

As much as i’d like to think i would have followed the example of Newton Knight, i think if i was born in the South and was military age ,i would have probably fought for the Confederacy. Why? Because even if i’m against slavery (it’s impossible all confederate veterans were in favour of it) i would have felt like i had no choice but fight because if i didn’t, myself and my family were likely to face repercussions for it.

“Why doesn’t he fight like the other men? Is he a yankee sympathiser? or a spy? and what about his family? maybe they’re like him?. We can’t trust him and his family and it’s better to put them to jail or kill them”.

And even if try to deserting if i get caught things are not gonna look good (jail and execution for treason)

Slavery was one the worst crime of humanity, and thank god Confederacy lost but it’s easy to judge people without trying to put yourself in their shoes.
