We did them in the ’60s, too. Turned out to be purely performative – would have made NO difference in an actual attack.

My grandad grew up in a small town in South-East Australia, and he did these during the 2nd World War as well. This was also back when class sizes were about 40 students in one room. He told me they also had buckets of sand in each classroom, in case something caught on fire, and at recess, they were trained to dig trenches in the school oval
