Anyone who was in the animating profession that went from drawing on paper to computer animation able to share how the switch from paper to computer went? Gotta be a bit of a watershed moment I’d imagine

Kinda funny that this cost less than what is used now

Reminds me of the original ‘Thr Little Mermaid’ and all those air bubbles were drawn by hand. Was such an amazing thing to see on those beautiful cartoons!

I wish there was a way to make this style much faster and more efficient with tools instead of doing everything digital.

So much artistry and we can’t even crop and center the video to make a decent post.

For anyone wondering, Disney’s last princess 2D animated film was *Princess and the Frog* (2009). Their overall last 2D film was *Winnie the Pooh* (2011).
One of the main reasons why WDAS discontinued the animation style was because their 2D movies like Treasure Planet, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, and Princess and the Frog underperformed at the box office, relative to expectations.
Meanwhile, Pixar, which was owned by Disney, was seeing record-breaking success with their 3D animated movies like Finding Nemo, Up, Monsters Inc., etc. As a result, they entirely pivoted to 3D animation, and haven’t gone back since.

This is how I’d read a choose your own adventure book.
Even digital animation is still wild and a ton of work, but old-fashioned, pre-computer animation is just wild. So much skill and labor involved.

Attention spans so short that this needs to be sped up now? God knows no-one has time to watch for over a minute.

I did this as an animator in school with these same exact old Disney desks that one of which is likely in this video. The school bought them when Disney’s Florida studio closed due to computer animation taking over the industry. They labeled each desk with the original animator’s name. I love traditional animation so much. I hope it makes a resurgence.

And we’ll never have this quality of animation again because of cheaper CG. The only way we’ll get this is if independent artists want to keep it alive.

This animation is by Aaron Blaise, somebody stole his video and sped it up for karma farming
Ryanookami on
Why is the voice tweaked? All it does is disguise who the talented artist is. I’m personally gonna take a shot in the dark and guess it’s Aaron Blaise, (it’s got his style, plus they’re also a lefty) but it would be nice if the person who did this could have the respect of their name on it.
So much technical skill, expertise and dedication involved in doing this. Such a shame Disney fucked over its animators and almost killed 2D animation here in the west.

Don’t worry because it’s all owned by major Chinese investors just like Star Wars as well unfortunately.

The crazy thing is that lead animators would usually only draw the key frames of each movement, while lesser paid “inbetweener” junior staff would have to fill the gaps.

My grandma used to work at a Soviet cartoon studio (don’t know what she did there though), and we had a bunch of transparent plastic films with characters painted on them at home.

If anyone’s interested Aaron Blaise has a great art channel where he goes over some of his work on Disney movies. He worked on Lion King, Mulan, etc. He has a pretty cool video where he shows his desk from when he worked on Lion King. He also has a new short animated film that he had drew called Snow Bear! Def worth a watch!
