I did this with my little sister growing up. The main difference was that I was actually playing her character and my cousin was playing against us while pretending to be me. It was fortunate that I had a third controller despite only having 2 player games.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 had a nice little feature where if someone was using the second controller, they could control Tails- he couldn’t properly die, and it didn’t matter if he failed a jumping puzzle he’d fly right back up to you. It was perfect if you had a little sibling who wanted to play and it didn’t matter in the slightest that they were terrible.

I found out the hard way that my 5 year old brother is too smart for this. The first time I did that, he immediately started saying, “Hey, I didn’t make my character do that!” It’s ridiculous
