A United Air Lines Douglas DC-8 took off from Idlewild Airport in New York collided in midair with a TWA Lockheed L-1049 descending toward LaGuardia Airport. The TWA crashed on Staten Island and the DC-8 in Brooklyn, killing all 128 aboard both aircraft & 6 people on the ground. (1960) [1300×1296]

My father was in high school at the time and one of his classmates had to go home to help calm his hysterical mother because she found someone’s head in her yard from the crash.
