Why would the FOB continuously send messages? Not only does it drain the little CR battery super fast, there is also no use for it.

Why these keys do this? In case of Bluetooth paired devices change codes and frequencies many times a second to avoid such problems, because they need to talk to each other at all time

It’s like the reverse of word-for-word captions. As in, the video shows exactly the same thing as the narration says, exactly when the narration says it. Something about it comes across as condescending to me, as if the makers think we couldn’t follow the story unless we have every word acted out visually as well. Or maybe it’s to hold the viewer’s attention span, like there *must* be something happening at all times, if that makes sense

Wanna know another cool life hack to avoid that ? Not buying an overpriced “smart” car that open up for thieves but lock you inside when they catch fire or auto-drive you into a lake.
FFS now they’re even making some of these stupid things without the actual “key” part. This way when it randomly decides to stop working or runs out of battery (which happens regularly, because of the mentioned fact that *it constantly emits a signal*) you can’t use your car at all, brilliant. Love to be stuck with an unworking car because someone forgot to recharge their fucking car key, or with no car at all because they forgot to lock it in its special anti-theft metal box.

Did the world really need to move on from putting a key in and turning it? Like surely the minor inconvenience of having to take a key out isn’t worth the weaker security, which you know is the point of having keys.

You can see the impact of this in London: in nice neighborhoods where people have expensive cars, most cars have anti thief steering wheel blockers on them that you can clearly see so that thieves wouldn’t bother with that car in the first instance.

My car doesn’t just unlock itself you have to push the button on the fob.

This is not true lol.
Encrypted key is sent only when you push button, nothing there persists connection all the time.
So mostly they steal car by catching your “close” signal beeing close to you with some gadgets in the pocket, then just reverse it to a car and open it.
Also every “push” key is generated for limited amount, get your key, push it 30-50 times without your car in the recieve zone and you will not be able to unlock car, the “limit” already gone, and the key in your keyring and secret key in a car are not the same and valid anymore.
Also some cars with keyless entry are just in listen mode, but fob not sending it all the time. Just connecting to car, thats all.

You can now also get ‘sleeper batteries’ for the fob which disconnect when they have been stationary for a period of 5 minutes

Regardless of the technical accuracy of the video; It’s this vulnerability that thieves are using to steal a lot of 2013 – 17 Holden Commodores. They use the relay attack to gain entry, plug in a box of tricks to the OBD2 port, quickly programme a new key fob, that they bring with them, and away they go. It takes minutes.
And that’s the reason I keep my key fobs in a metal box (I think it was a candy gift-tin, that I picked up from a charity shop for a couple of $) at home.

When I hold the close button while pressing the open button two times my key enters the sleep-mode and only works when pressing a button first.
