Because YouTube doesn’t get the ad revenue when they don’t show you the ad… So you pay them in place of the advertiser… As long as people are using YouTube then it’s a win for YouTube.

There’s a simple trick to skip publicity,
1.open the video you wanna watch (ad will start)
2.close the video & open it again
3.repeat a third time & you should be able to watch your video without any ad.

If you are using something for free then it’s not the product, *you* are.
It’s the same as free to air tv. The whole thing is just a vehicle to get ads to you; they literally create tv content so that more viewers will watch and they can charge more to the advertisers for those time slots.
